How to Prepare Kava

Traditional kava is made by mixing kava powder with cold water and straining it. You'll need a kava strainer bag (or a clean muslin cloth), a large bowl and a cup or coconut shell.

Method

  1. Measure. As a guide, use about 111g of kava powder for 1.5 litres of water, as recommended on our pack. If you're new to kava, start with less.
  2. Add water. Put the powder in your strainer bag, place the bag in a large bowl and pour in cool or lukewarm water. Don't use hot water.
  3. Knead. Squeeze and knead the bag in the water for about 5–10 minutes. The water will turn a cloudy, muddy brown.
  4. Strain. Squeeze the bag firmly to get out as much liquid as you can, then remove it.
  5. Serve. Pour into a cup or coconut shell. Traditionally kava is drunk in one go, then shared in rounds.

Tips

  • Kava tastes earthy and a little bitter. This is normal.
  • Kava can numb your mouth and lips slightly.
  • Wait a while before having more.
